Clinical Studies on Guillain-Barre Syndrome in Childhood

Abstract
The clinical studies were performed on 36 patients with Guillain-Barre Syndrome who had been admitted to the ped. dept. of livungpool: National linivcrsity Hospital during 4¨ö years period from Jan. 1972 to July 1976.
1) The seasor_al distribution showed highest prevalence rate during summer months and no annual difference tivas noticed.
2) Boys ,were affected more frequently than girls in 2.3:1 ratio and .the pea¢¥s age was in preschool a.ge (between 3 to 6 years), with youngest age. affected being S months of age.
3) 24 out of 36 cases had preceding illness, and majority (13 cases) was upper respiratory infection.
4) The most common type of paralysis at the time of admission was peralysis or lower extremies in 36 cases, followed by upper extremities in 22, neck in 9, respiratory muscles in 6. facial muscle: in 2 and ~straocular muscles in 1.
5) Albuminoc;rto¢¥:ogic dissociation. of C. S. F was detected in 35 cases, and in 1 case, there was no increase in protein level.
6) Majority of the patient (80.6 0) Showed marred improvement at the time of discharge, and in 16 cases in which close follow-up could be possible for up to 1 2 years, complete recovery was seen in all cases. 2 deaths were seen during hospitalization,.
